Shit-Box Jimmy –“Alive at the Door” LP

This is a hootin’ and hollerin’ good time! Steeped in the tradition of classic rockabilly and seemingly sloppy current garage (You know the type. the type that sounds sloppy but really isn’t….Most French garage acts come to mind :D ). Apparently this thing was recorded live. You can’t really tell, AKA the recording is really well-done. At times it reminds me of the aesthetic of Dead Moon but not quite as lo-fi or sloppy. I’ve often thought that about the only styles of rock n roll that can be pulled off 100% live on record are garage and/or rockabilly. The type of music that needs no explanation/no extreme flourishes. It’s plain old gritty emotion laid out in front of you. Just like Dead Moon set out to do so many years ago. There’s quite a few tempo changes throughout this record that show off the tightness of the live band. Sometimes songs even speed up a bit more than they seem they should, but the band keeps it all together. It seems intentional more-so than a slight hiccup. The speed enhances the intensity of the passage, which they use ingeniously on “Hillbilly Ruckus”. I’ve got a copy of their tape floating around that I apologize for not reviewing in a timely manner. It’s also top notch. I assume that shit’s sold out by now anyways. You’ll wanna go with the LP anyways. :D I’m not sure how easily they’ll be able to cross over to the masses with a name like Shit-Box Jimmy but I doubt that’s any of their concern. They’ve got beers to finish and songs to write.

I recently caught them at Wonderful Fest in Cleveland and they definitely delivered live…and they’re a really nice group of kids. You can catch em live in Milwaukee on Saturday August 4th at Quarters w/ Hue Blanc’s Joyless Ones (Kind Turkey Approved. They will have a cassette out on KT at some point in 2012), and Slovenly Recording Artist’s Sultan Bathery!

You can hear the whole LP over at the band’s Bandcamp (If you want a physical copy I’m sure you can track Joey Nix down!):
